Tampa, Florida, is going to the dogs – in a good way!
With its warm climate and fun lifestyle, Tampa is a great place to own a dog. Pet owners bring their canine companions nearly everywhere they go, from dog beaches to pet-friendly restaurants. If you are new to the Tampa Bay area, are a new dog owner or if you just want to give your old dog a new thrill, here are a few pet-friendly activities and places that you and your dog will enjoy.
Dogs love to go to the park! Many dog parks allow pups to roam free, where they can interact and play with other dogs. Most dog parks feature secure fencing and posted safety rules to keep your furry friend as safe as possible. Be sure to bring some waste pickup bags, in case the park does not provide them.
Take your pooch to dog-friendly parks, where you and your four-legged friend can have a great time. Ballast Point Park offers a spectacular view of Tampa Bay and downtown Tampa in the distance, for example, while the trail at Lowry Park runs along the scenic Hillsborough River and through oak woodlands.
There are several locations you can explore free of charge or with a small donation. Heritage Village, for example, is a 21-acre open-air living history museum that features dozens of historic structures, some of which date back to the 1800s.
Swimming is a whole-body workout for your dog. This form of exercise helps build strong bones and muscles, supports your dog’s heart health and helps your dog stay at a healthy weight. Swimming is also a great way for your pup to cool off on a hot Tampa day.
Dogs can run off-leash and go for a swim at one of the dog-friendly beaches in Tampa, Florida. Picnic Island Park Dog Beach features clean sandy beaches while Davis Island Dog Beach has fountains, benches and even a hose-off station where you can clean up your doggy after a good splash in the water.
You and your pooch can grab a bite to eat at the ever-growing number of dog-friendly restaurants in Tampa. Your pup can enjoy the daily doggy special at Gaspar’s Grotto or nibble on a dog biscuit at GrillSmith.
The Brown Boxer Pub & Grille has a wide selection of food and drinks in an exciting energetic atmosphere you and your pups will love.
Sweet Sage Cafe offers canine cuisine that includes “Bowser” biscuits and gravy, “French Poodle” toast, “Wake Up Little Shih Tzu” scrambled eggs and “Can’t Take My Paws Off of You” with turkey or ham.
After a romp at a dog park or beach and a nice treat, take your dog for a ride. Be sure to roll down the window a bit so your pup can get a whiff of fresh air.
Take your dog sightseeing on a “Howl at the Moon” cruise offered by the Shell Key Shuttle. Dogs ride free of charge on these dog-friendly sunset boat cruises; one dog per adult. According to the Shell Key Shuttle website, the cruise costs “$25.00 for well behaved, leashed adults and $12.50 for muzzled children 12 and under.” The 90-minute sunset cruise will take you and your canine companion through residential waterways and the gorgeous barrier islands south of the city.
Many shops and patio restaurants at Hyde Park Village allow dogs. Take your pooch to Downtown Dogs for a designer dog collar, organic or natural dog treat, or cozy new bed, for example.
Do you and your dog appreciate a good deal? Take your pup to Ellenton Premium Outlets.
